.A senatorial skeleton crew held Thursday's session open for more than four hours, and long after the House had adjourned, before calling it quits for the weekend. Bigger news came after the session, when Senate President Karen Spilka issued a statement saying the Senate would take action on Monday to give cities and towns the ability to postpone municipal elections and said "we are also working with stakeholders to postpone certain special Senate state elections" scheduled for March 31. Voters are scheduled on March 31 to elect successors to former Sens. Don Humason of Westfield and Vinny deMacedo of Plymouth. House special elections are also on the calendar for March 31 to elect successors to former Reps.
Shaunna O'Connell and Jennifer Benson. Those also appear unlikely. "Due to the COVID19 pandemic and in an effort to protect public health, the House plans to take up legislation on Monday to allow cities and towns to postpone municipal elections. In addition, the House will move to postpone and reschedule certain special state legislative elections." House Speaker Robert DeLeo said in a 3:45 p.m. statement. The Senate handled routine matters when senators were in the chamber and plans to meet again on Monday at 11 a.m.
